This paper compares the performance of 2D-SAFT and 3D-SAFT (Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique) and quantifies it using the example of inspecting large forgings. It is shown that a full 3D-SAFT analysis not only provides better defect separation in the third spatial direction but also improves the structure-dependent signal-to-noise ratio, thereby increasing the detectability of small defects. The current practical applications are illustrated by comparing the computation time on the CPU of a modern PC with that required when using Tesla graphics cards.
